Kildress’ recent good run continued today with an 0-18 to 1-12 win in a thoroughly entertaining game at Eskra, well refereed by Martin Sludden who let the game flow to the benefit of everyone. Whilst the Tones played well throughout, there’s no doubt that Eskra’s loss of Joe McCarroll after a heavy collision at the end of the first quarter had a major impact on the game as he had by then already kicked 1-3 and, along with the classy Peter Hughes, was giving Kildress plenty of bother. McCarroll’s second minute goal gave the Emmets a perfect start and it wasn’t until the closing minutes of the half that six Kildress points to just one from Eskra left the Tones leading by 0-12 to 1-6 at the break. The third quarter saw Eskra drive forward at great pace and they outscored Kildress by 0-5 to 0-2, deservedly drawing level and causing the Tones defence plenty of problems: a couple of their points could just as easily have been goals. Adam Connolly however was becoming a major influence for Kildress and after weathering the Eskra storm they went on to fire over three late points to win the game. Outstanding for the Tones were the pacy Corey Holland (0-1), Matty McGuigan (0-2) and Marty Loughran, the Connolly brothers, Philip Lennon (0-6) whilst ‘wise heads’ Des Treacy (0-3) and Marty Grimes had a strong influence as did Matthew Heagney, Eoin Brannigan (0-3), Caolan McNamee (0-1) and Frank McGurk (0-2).
