Six weeks ago an injury time goal cost Kildress a game against Loughmacrory that they really should have won and tonight the Tones enjoyed the other side of that coin when a Marty Grimes injury time goal saw them sneak a late, late victory against unlucky hosts Gortin. For the opening and closing ten minutes of this game Kildress definitely had the better of things but for the forty minutes in between, Gortin held the upper hand and will be disappointed about how things turned out for them in a highly entertaining game, well refereed by Cathal Forbes. Kildress led by 0-4 to 0-1 after ten minutes but from there to the break Gortin dominated things, the outstanding Sean McAleer’s wonderfully clever goal a part of a great spell that saw them outscore the Tones by 1-7 to 0-1. Two late Philip Lennon points just about kept Kildress in touch, 0-7 to 1-9. By the end of the third quarter Gortin had eased into a seven-point lead, their precise and effective play contrasting with Kildress looseness and several wides. Matty McGuigan’s third point of the half however then kick-started Kildress who went on to outscore a tiring Gortin by 1-6 to a point. The Connolly brothers, Des Treacy (0-1), Marty Grimes (1-2), Dean McNally and Matthew Heagney (0-2) took a firm grip round the middle whilst up front Philip Lennon (0-3), Frank McGurk (0-3) and Matty McGuigan (0-4) started to hurt the St Patrick’s. It looked like Kildress had left it too late until one final injury time play saw the ball flicking about in the home square before Marty Grimes got a final hand to it to send it to the net in what turned out to be the game’s last touch and giving a delighted Kildress a 1-15 to 1-14 victory.
