Kildress bounced back from their Championship Final defeat and kept their play-off hopes alive with this spirited 1-19 to 0-14 win over Derrytresk at a chilly Gortacladdy this evening. Whilst the Tones always had their noses in front in this one, it took Pauric Lagan’s goal going into the final quarter to open up a real match-winning lead as Derrytresk, with Niall Gavin again a major thorn in Kildress’ side with seven points, showed why they too are still vying for promotion.
Kildress reached half-time 0-11 to 0-8 in front but in the final minute of the half it had seemed impossible for Derrytresk not to goal only for the crossbar and then Eoghan McElduff to come spectacularly to Kildress’ rescue. Kildress went on to score five of the second half’s first six points but after Derrytresk grabbed three of their own, Pauric Lagan (1-2) palmed to the net to effectively seal the game. Des Tracey (0-3 in total) was prominent for Kildress throughout and was well supported by Jonny and Adam Connolly (0-2), Calum Holland, Aaron and Stephen Loughran, Enda McAleer (0-1), Caloan McNamee (0-1) and the sparkling Matty McGuigan (0-9). Referee Gary Gormley kept what was an attractive the game well under control. After this result a win in Kildress’ final game against Clann na Gael would now guarantee a promotion play-off spot.
