A poignant week for our Club ended with an important victory over our neighbours Rock in Round II of this year’s Donnelly Vauxhall Division II League.
Kildress were much livelier than they had shown last week against The Moy, particularly up front where they were much sharper and had an impressive spread of scorers. Meanwhile, Rock simply missed their key missing players.
Playing with a strong breeze the Wolfe Tones led by 0-10 to 0-5 at half-time, following strong showings from Philip Lennon (who would finish with five points), the Hollands, Marty Loughran, Caolan McNamee, Enda McAleer and Dean McNally, the latter two strong at mid-field. Frank McGurk set Kildress up perfectly with the first three points of the second-half but in the final 20 minutes Rock rallied well and but for some poor shooting would have added to the 1-5 they did score. Kildress’ younger players brought a much-needed pace to the team, particularly the sparkling Marty Loughran, Stephen McGurk and Corey Holland. A good, well-contested game was well refereed by Eugene Hughes.
