Kildress’ ‘Dual Championship Weekend’ with Moortown finished in a disappointing ‘0-2’ today as our men fell to the St Malachy’s by 0-16 to 1-5 in the LCC GROUP Intermediate Championship Quarter-Final at splendid Loughmacrory.

But whilst yesterday’s Ladies Final was snatched from our grasp at the very death, that was certainly not the case today as Moortown were deserving winners, having the better of things more-or-less from first to last.

Kildress might have dominated the opening possession, but Moortown broke for the first two scores and whilst one of The Tones’ few long deliveries to Caolan McNamee ended with a smart goal finish from Matty McGuigan to put Kildress ahead, Kildress just looked slow and ponderous. By half time they trailed by 0-8 to 1-1 and could have been further behind only for a fine save by Gerard Grimes.

The best Kildress could do was get it back to a three-point game, but an increasingly comfortable Moortown then scored six of the next seven points to put things beyond any doubt. On a day that they were simply very flat as a team, Kildress were best served by the drives out of defence by Johnny Connolly and Callum Holland, by lively sub Conor Quinn and by the sporadic threat up front of Matty McGuigan (who scored all but a point of his team’s total) and the not-well-supplied Caolan McNamee.

Stephen Campbell was a first-class referee of what turned out to be a disappointing game.
