Kildress and Drumragh delivered a spectacular, free-flowing clash in the perfect setting of Fintona last night, where the eventual margin of victory (4-14 to 3-6) was tough on the Sarsfields. Kildress though trailed only twice in the game, in the opening minute and again after Drumragh scored their first goal, but it was in the final quarter that they pulled away, scoring 1-5 without reply after Drumragh had netted their third goal. Both teams’ forward play included plenty of direct, hard running but Kildress had that bit more power and were tigerish in their tackling once they were able to stop Drumragh’s powerful runners building up any momentum.
Philip Lennon’s penalty (1-3 in total) and Matty McGuigan’s fine goal (2-3 in total) helped Kildress to a 2-6 to 1-5 half-time lead and two early second-half points put them six ahead. Four of the next seven scores were goals, two to each team and all the result of fast, raiding play though Michael John Connolly in the Kildress goals was unfortunate with the way the rebounds fell after he had made a couple of outstanding saves. The big score in the game was probably Pauric Lagan’s wonderful point (0-2 in total), scored after Drumragh’s third goal had brought it back to a three-point game. From there to the finish Kildress were in control.
In a game played in perfect conditions in terms of setting and weather, and very well refereed by Mickey Mc Carron, Kildress had powerful performers in Dean McNally, Johnny Connolly, Callum Holland, Caolan McNamee and the outstanding Des Treacy (0-2), Stephen Loughran (0-2) and Matty McGuigan (2-3).
