After a bit of good recent form Kildress slumped to a seven-point defeat at Castlederg today, losing by 0-12 to 1-16 to a much superior home team in their outstanding setting. The Tones were outplayed, out-thought and out-fought by a St Eugene’s side that got the better of them all over the field and in every part of the game. Two early Matty McGuigan points had helped Kildress to an 0-3 to 0-1 lead but a quick-fire goal and two points from Castlederg put the Tones onto a back foot that they stayed on for the rest of the game. A couple of spectacular points from Eoin Brannigan were as good as the first half got for Kildress and they reached half-time trailing by 0-7 to 1-9. If anything, the second-half got worse for Kildress as they continued to fumble and cough up possession whilst Castlederg were sharper, more purposeful and far more cutting in attack. The Tones, driven on by Des Treacy, Caolan McNamee and Adam Connolly, did rally to bring it back to three points but it was the St Eugenes who rose to the challenge, firing over the game’s last four points to seal a comfortable and deserved victory in a good open, free-flowing game, well refereed by Kieran Taggart.
Kildress Reserves meanwhile won by 3-16 to 2-7, Colm Loughran’s 0-7 and Mickey Lennon’s 1-4 being highlights of the game.
